When given the opportunity, Missy steps out of her comfort zone as stay-at-home mom of four to prove she’s as good a singer as Erica. EXCERPT
“She can’t take care of a baby.” Mama pressed at her temples with the heels of her hands.
“We can’t take care of a baby. Don’t you see, Annie? It would be better off not to be born.” The
eerie calm of her voice broke over into sobbing. This once strong woman, who’d withstood the
pains of birth, death, and poverty, fell onto the table in a heap of fearful sorrow.
“Mama, now listen to me.” For the first time Annie could remember, her own mother
needed a scolding, and backward as it was, Annie was the only one there to do it. With her jaw
clenched and a fire in her belly, she stood and pulled Mama by the arms into an upright position.
“That’s your own flesh and blood you’re talking about. A living soul. And if you believe the
Bible like you say you do, then you know that tiny person already looks like God somehow. It
says so. You know it’s true. Made in His image.”
